Philippines Photo Gallery: Anilao mantis shrimps

We took an underwater photography trip to the Philippines in December 2016 and returned in November 2024.

Mantis shrimps, or stomatopods, are marine crustaceans, The carapace covers only the rear part of the head and the first four segments of the thorax. They have powerful claws used to attack and kill prey by spearing, stunning, or dismemberment. There are two main types, those that have spear-like appendages (spearers) and those that have club-like appendages (smashers). Both types have elaborate eyes.
